Brewing Coffee One Cup at a Time
Our Keurig K65 single cup coffee brewer was a gift last Christmas.
I am so pleased with the flavor of the coffees, the individual selections, and the features allowing me to set the brewer to heat the water before we get up in the mornings. There are pros and cons to every appliance. Original cost, doesn't factor in here since it was a gift, maintenance cost, so far, none, and ongoing expenses for daily use, which consists of buying the K-Cups that work in the Keurig brand one-cup brewers and occasionally cleaning with white vinegar.
I did debate on the practicality of a pot that only makes one cup at a time.
I suppose if there were 4 or more coffee drinkers in the home, this brewer wouldn't handle demand, but with just the two of us, simply filling the water reservoir and having the timer set for 15 minutes before we plan on looking for a hot cup of coffee is all the preliminary work needed.
Of course this item replaces our most recent appliance, the electric drip coffee brewer, but here's a long line of coffee appliances we've had in our 46 years of marriage:
- Stove-top percolator, which made 6 to 8 cups of thick muddy coffee - usually poured out 3 or 4 remaining cups that had a chewy grounds in the bottom.
- Electric percolator. My best memory of these is the fabric coated wire that always seemed to get tangled into the hot surface of the coffee pot causing a smoldering wire odor and while perking, drawing down power on the lights.
- Melita brand drip filter over a carafe. This was the best flavor of all coffees but it was impossible to keep the pot of coffee warm for the second cup.
- Mr. Coffee style electric drip coffee makers makes 8 to 10 cups. The original coffee makers never turned off, so my best memory of these was the burnt coffee smell in the evenings when we left it turned on all day with 3 or 4 cups thickening all day in our absence. Of course the law came to our rescue and required a 2 hour auto shut off for this style brewer.
- An electric 8 cup brewer with a reservoir for the brewed coffee, dispensed one cup at a time with a push button;
- Our lovely coffee press, which we usually use for the two of us for fresh ground decaf beans and two robust cups along with desert in the evenings; and last but not least,
- The Keurig K65.
I qualified for Klub Keurig when I registered my brewer on Keurig.com
When I received this gift I registered the brewer and signed up with Keurig to be a Klub Keurig Rewards member. I am just a few points away from earning 1/2 off a new brewer. That's an aggressive rewards program. With that I get deep discounts and special purchase options with my rewards. I also order K-Cups when they are sale at department stores and I have healthy coupons that I can apply to the purchase.
We're very pleased with the brewer, but have to admit we do pull out the old 8 cup brewer with the reservoir when we need to fill a thermos, or are having company and need a larger quantity of hot coffee all at once.
Some additional items to have around the kitchen to accessorize your K65 include the filter basket to fill with your favorite grounds. A clever dispenser for you K-Cups, and maybe a few travel cups that keep the coffee piping hot for the road, along with lots of K-Cups in a variety of brews.
Isn't it just human nature, to buy an excellent appliance, then begin buying it little accessories and adapters?
What is your brewed coffee preference?
